In December 2021, amidst the majestic landscapes of Gangtok, a transformative workshop unfolded, igniting conversations about the city’s future. Spearheaded by a diverse group of stakeholders, this event aimed to transcend boundaries, foster inclusivity, and pave the way for collective action. Baato Khoju was conceptualized by the Architects of Sikkim and delivered by Progressive Learning Foundation.
Setting the Stage: Understanding the Big Picture
The workshop emerged against the backdrop of Gangtok’s rich history and evolving urban landscape. The city has witnessed a myriad of changes over time, prompting a collective introspection on its future trajectory. From sensitizing the public on environmental issues to championing egalitarian values, Gangtok has emerged as a beacon of progress and inclusivity. The Baato Khoju workshop sought to build upon this legacy, harnessing the collective wisdom of its residents to shape a vision for the city’s future.
The workshop was part of the annual exhibition of the Architects of Sikkim (AS), which was held from the 4th of Dec 2021 to the 12th of Dec 2021. Baato Khoju was held on the 11th of Dec where local citizens of Gangtok from all walks of life were invited.
Agenda: Navigating Through Complexity
PLF was assigned the responsibility of designing a workshop with a multifaceted agenda aimed at soliciting diverse perspectives and fostering collaborative problem-solving. The day began with a panoramic view of Gangtok’s evolution, tracing its journey through time. Participants were encouraged to ponder over key questions: What kind of city do we want Gangtok to be? What are the pressing problems we face? How can we troubleshoot and find solutions? These questions served as a springboard for dialogue, inviting participants to dream big and think boldly about the city’s future.
Charting a Path Forward
Central to the workshop were the deliverables - tangible outcomes that would guide future planning and decision-making. Day 2 of the workshop was earmarked for generating a roadmap or path to a roadmap, drawing insights from the data collected on Day 1. From aspirations and bucket lists to prioritized problems and innovative solutions, these deliverables aimed to capture the essence of Gangtok’s collective vision. Through a collaborative and participatory process, participants sought to create a roadmap that would steer Gangtok towards a sustainable and equitable future.
Feedback and Reflection: Learning from Experience
Throughout the workshop, feedback served as a guiding light, illuminating areas for improvement and innovation. As the workshop drew to a close, participants reflected on their experiences, sharing insights, deltas, and plusses for future iterations.
The invaluable insights garnered from the workshop now serve as a compass, directing both planners and policymakers towards a future characterized by sustainability and inclusivity.
